Sucker Punch Extended Edition Blu
Well I didn feel sucker punched in anyway by Sucker Punch. There was no great swerve, no big reveal, no twist that you couldn see coming. That said Sucker Punch is still mildly entertaining although the extended cut takes an already lengthy film and makes it 18 minutes longer for no discernable good reason. After helming three very good films (Dawn of the Dead, 300, Watchmen) Director Zack Snyder hasn exactly hit the ball out of the park with his last two films: The Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and this one. Sucker Punch has its moments but tries to be too cute and is effusive in every way, highlighted by a soundtrack that runs the gamut of everything from classic rock to rap, with three of the songs sung by lead actress Emily Browning.
Browning plays a 20-year-old girl who is committed to a mental asylum by her abusive stepfather (Gerard Plunkett) who wants to get his hands on the fortune that Baby Doll late mother left her. Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac), the asylum head orderly, is bribed by Babydoll's stepfather into forging the signature of the resident psychiatrist, Dr. Gorski is the Madam who choreographs sexy dance numbers, and the girls are sex slaves for wealthy, drooling patrons. Babydoll has been promised to a roller who will arrive in five days. She determined to escape the asylum before he arrives and enlists the aid of the other girls: Amber, Blondie, Rocket, and Sweet Pea (Cornish). When Baby Doll dances she creates a suggested hypnotic effect on those watching her, essentially paralyzing them until she done. During her dances, she and the other girls slip into other fantasy worlds (maybe this girl really IS crazy) where they have to locate several items that will aid in their escape plan.
These include battling undead soldiers in a steampunk version of World War I; fighting off waves of orcs and a dragon in a medieval fantasy world; and boarding a train to disarm a bomb guarded by legions of robots. In each of these worlds the girls are advised by the Wise Man plaved by Scott Glenn. It is these vignettes that make Sucker Punch worth watching although it begs the question of why the girls have to go through all this trouble. Since the guys become mesmerized when watching Baby Doll dance why not just cut their throats when they are entranced? You never actually see Baby Doll dance action cuts to fantasyland as soon as she begins and cuts back when she done which adds an air of mystery.
Snyder anchors most of the film in the bordello fantasy where he can parade around the girls in skimpy outfits with greasy slobs lusting after them. So much of the film takes place buy wow weapons outside the constraints of the real world that you almost forget where they are at to begin with. There seems to be little reason for the bordello world to exist beyond the excuse of hot girls in sexy costumes playing to an audience of fetish freaks. The payoff is underwhelming and as empowered as the women are in their fantasy realms they end up still being meek and cowering in the real world. This is underscored by the final fate of Baby Doll herself so in a sense we do get sucker punched long Boooooo for Mr. Snyder on that note.
The extended edition contains the footage that Snyder had to cut out in order to make a PG-13 rating. This includes a bit more blood, violence, and gore during the fantasy fights and a midly steamy sexual scene between Baby Doll and the High Roller (Jon Hamm). There also a music number between Blue and Madam Gorski where they sing is the Drug as an opening act for their bordello guests.
The Blu-ray extended edition comes with Warner Bros. Maximum Movie Mode which is always my favorite special feature. Most studios have a similar type of Picture-in-picture feature but WB are always extremely well done. It like getting an audio and video commentary as Snyder provides a wealth of information about the film. Takes a look at the complete project from development to stunt work and special FX. It like getting an audio commentary and behind-the-scenes documentaries all in one and since this is an extended cut you essentially have the deleted scenes. The maximum Movie Mode gave me a better insight on the film and I bumped my grade from a C to a C+ because of this feature.

Sucker Punch Animated Shorts(11:23): A wow gold collection of animated prequel shorts about the fantasy realm scenarios envisioned by Baby Doll
I wrote this originally about the film back during the release.
This story is supposed to take place in 5 days time. Did this girl get treated so horribly bad within the first day that she just magically escaped into her fantasy?
WTF goes on when they dance? We see an action sequence and then all the sudden we're pulled back to 'reality' and everyone is like wow whoa holy cow? Anyone remember the God Awful 'Sidekicks' with Jonathan Brandis and Chuck Norris? At least during his nunchuck championship, they showed a guy nunchucking. I'm supposed to believe, even in a dream sequence, that this giant 15 foot tall stone/steel samurai blade hits babydoll as hard as a dumptruck, throws her across the room, smashes her into the ground, and she just stands back up, all Neo/Agent Smith style, with zero blood or bruise? BallShet! Ballshet Ballshet Ballshet!
And for everyone saying ooh the story sucks you in, it grabs you right away, blah blah blah. I felt like I was watching a movie in slow motion for the time I sat there.
I loved Dawn of the Dead. Loved 300. Appreciated Watchmen, appreciated the Director's Cut even more. But seriously, this movie was worse than the Last Resident Evil, and if anyone here remembers, I phucking loathed that movie. At least it had a semblence of cohesion in between its cornnugget crap.
SuckerPunch has to be the biggest letdown wow gold of a film for in a looong, loooong time. It's like Gigli meets the last Airbender meets Land of the Lost. HORRIBLE
I did not feel as strongly as TheMovieGuy, but I was disappointed in this movie too, although for different reasons. The fantasy scenes were amazing. The quasi-reality scenes were trying too hard to force the fantasy scenes to make some kind of sense in the rotating realities, and it didn't work. It was a goofy, over-the-top FX extravaganza set in an insane asylum. It didn't need to make all that much sense. The extremely bleak ending was a major downer, too. It was worth the $5 I paid to see it at the theatre, but I don't need to see it again at home.
I just watched the movie yesterday, and I say the Sucker Punch to Sucker Punch was that it was an unexpected ending. I thought it was good, once you let go of the whole escape to fantasy to deal with reality thing. Maybe not great, but great eye candy, that is the action sequences and the girls outfits. BUT, I will say how excited I am that this is the guy who is doing Superman. Cause if he does half the fight scenes like the ones at the temple between Zod and Sups, it's gonna be freeking awesome!!!!
While I am a huge Zach Snyder fan I refuse to be a Zach Snyder apologist. Clearly this movie has it's problems, all buy wow weapons of which stem from poor writing. Was I expecting Citizen Kane? Nope, but what I was expecting was engaging characters, engaging dialogue and an overall cohesive plot that built to a climactic and satisfying conclusion. If I had my way I would of lost all of the dual reality-mental institution-brothel stuff and just set the movie in that fantasy universe and told a cool kick ass adventure story.
Having said all that I absolutely loved the battle sequences. The visual effects were amazing. The score was interesting and ecletic with my favorite song being Search Destroy by Skunk Anasie which is actually a cover originally done by Iggy Pop. I loved the energy during the orc battle and you can see the extended version on YouTube.
I can't really go higher then a C. It's not nearly as bad as the 22% on Rotten Tomatoes but Zach Snyder needs to stick to directing and let someone eles do the writing. For that reason I still have high confidence in Superman thx to Christofer Nolan being involved Snyder not writing it.
